Nestled among the moss draped oaks and picturesque bayous, the town of Lacombe is one of East St. Tammany's hidden treasures. It is home to the Big Branch National Wildlife Refuge and its multitudes of wildlife including the bald eagle. Lacombe began as a creole encampment along the winding Bayou Lacombe and Lake Pontchartrain. Visited in 1699 by Pierre le Moyne Seuir d'Iberville and four Canadians, Lacombe was destined to become an imporant trade route to those doing business and living in New Orleans. Local Lacombe attractions include Bayou Lacombe, Cane Bayou, Historical figure Chata-Ima, FountainBleu State Park, Northlake Nature Center, Big Branch Marsh and Wildlife Refuge, Our Lady of Lourdes Shrine, Santa on the Bayou, Mardi Gras parades,and the Historic Townsite of Oaklawn. |
